About the Provider
“Volunteering in both a nursing home and visiting hospice patients inspired me to pursue a career in medicine because I witnessed the difference personal and empathetic care make in people’s lives,” said Dr. Maria Thies. “It also sparked my ongoing interest in aging enough that I continued my training in Geriatric Medicine at UCLA after my Internal Medicine residency.”
No wonder words like compassion, respect, and dignity guide daily interactions with her patients. Feeling blessed to touch so many in a positive way, Dr. Thies feels that everyone should live life to the fullest... while also practicing moderation. One of the ways that she practices balance in her own life is through long-distance running because it allows her to experience freedom and joy. Apparently, she’s done enough long distances to qualify for the Boston Marathon!
Dr. Thies completed both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees at Loyola University in Chicago, where she also did research in neuroscience and healthcare economics. After receiving her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, Dr. Thies remained at Michigan State University as a clinical instructor during her time in residency.
When she’s not running or enjoying a Firebirds hockey game, Dr. Thies might be found dining out or experiencing many of the Coachella Valley activities she’s come to love, like the McCallum Theater or the Living Desert. Whenever possible, she loves to spend time with her family and friends... perhaps especially with her mother who she says has always been her biggest cheerleader and support.
